About the artist...
Roger was born in Little Glenham (Saxmundam, England) where his father worked as an estate gardener. At school age, he moved with his parents and sister to the small town of Hadleigh, near Ipswich, Suffolk. There, Roger spent his school holidays and every spare moment fishing the rivers and roaming the picturesque country side, where his interest in sketching birds and their habitats began to take form. Upon moving to Australia in his early 20’s (where he married his wife Gillian), Roger could finally concentrate on his passion for observing and painting birds – a passion which developed into a career spanning over 30 years.
Now considered to be one of Australia’s foremost bird artists, Roger lives with his wife and daughter in The Old Mine Managers House (a State Heritage listed dwelling) in the rural town of Kapunda, found in the Mid-North of South Australia. There, he works from home at the “Birds of a Feather Studio and Gallery”; a converted underground water-tank and the adjoining cellar rooms of the Mine Manager’s House.
Over the years, Roger has received many awards and accolades for his works, and has exhibited widely in exhibitions throughout Australia and overseas, including galleries in Sydney, Melbourne, Darwin and – notably – London. With such nation-wide success, it is little wonder his paintings have been referred to as "Australian wildlife art at it's finest."
Roger is passionate about his work, possessing a fascination for the colour and splendour of Australian Birds and wildlife. His paintings depict birds the way we all see them: perched on road side fences, squabbling in fruit trees, or simply within their natural habitats of native Australian flora.
Roger’s works have been said to have a “rural” feel to them, with rusted barbed wire and gnarled, weather-worn fence posts often a running theme within them. Combining the very different textures of wood, rust, vegetation, water, feathers and fur create an alternative feel in each individual painting, and provide a challenge for the artist. |
